About Us

Echoes of the Name began in 2006 as a personal notebook about my religious journey; with a primary focus on the Jōdo Shin stream of Pure Land Buddhism and some discussion of the Sōtō Zen and Christian traditions with which I have also been involved.

However I have long had hopes that the blog might come to function as a place of dialogue based upon the spirit of true encounter which the late Zen teacher Kosho Uchiyama expresses very succinctly as follows:

[Practicing the Buddha-dharma] means aiming at manifesting the life of each and every encounter, and seeing all of these encounters as our own life.”

Posts and regular comments from some of my close friends such as Jishin, Gekko, Ray and Jon, and also members of the wider Sangha such as Stephen, Marcus and Doug, have already started to help the site move in such a direction and I hope that this will continue to develop.

Posts on this blog represent the thoughts of the individual authors and do not necessarily represent the teachings or opinions of any groups or organisations to which we may belong.

This blog is intended as a place of reflection and dialogue rather than a teaching medium.  Therefore if you are interested in exploring Jōdo Shinshū, or any of the other traditions or teachings we discuss, please be sure to seek out a community where you can meet face-to-face with a good teacher and fellow-practicers.
