Welcome to Echoes of the Name; the blog of Dharma friends Kyōshin (慶心), Jishin (慈心) and Gakko (月光) who are members of the Shogyoji-Three Wheels sangha, and followers of the Jōdo Shinshū tradition.

Kyōshin (慶心)

I was raised Christian but started studying the Dharma in my early twenties; practicing in the Sōtō Zen tradition for two years, before discovering that the Jōdo Shinshū path was more suited to my life circumstances in 2001.

In 2003 I took kikyoshiki through the auspices of Shogyoji and the Tokyo Higashi Honganji, and also began a Master’s Degree in Buddhist Studies which I completed successfully in 2006. In terms of practice I follow a traditional Jōdo Shinshū path, but still draw on the teachings of the Sōtō teacher Eihei Dōgen for guidance; as well as the rich and diverse heritage I have received from my family, friends and teachers.

Jishin (慈心)

I have been attending my home temple since 2001, my first serious commitment to following a tradition since my conversion to Buddhism at the age of 21. In the past four years I was given the opportunity, through the compassionate guidance and support of the Sangha both in the U.K and Japan, to live for a time in the temple’s London taya and to undertake an intense period of retreat and pilgrimage in Japan.

I am a married lay-person who lives and works full time in London. My particular focus at the moment is the traditional Jōdo Shinshū gongyo, not only in learning the practice of its liturgical forms but also exploring its essence, the expression of faith and gratitude that makes it the heart of the Shin Buddhist way of life.

Gakko (月光)

I am from Chicago, USA where I attended the Midwest Buddhist Temple during Rev. Ogui’s tenure as priest. More recently I moved to the UK where I have become a member of Three Wheels temple. I am lay-person, and I work in the city of London.
